El Proyecto Gaviota de la Armada de Chile ha sido adjudicado a Airbus Helicopters, quien presentó su modelo H125, o AS350 B3e, uno de los miembros de la familia Ecureuil. El proyecto Gaviota se tramitó durante cerca de 10 años y finalmente fue en el presupuesto de 2019 cuando se autorizó un monto de US$6.765 millones para una primera etapa, que debería materializarse este mismo año. El programa contempla la adquisición de 5 helicópteros y la construcción de un hangar en la base de Torquemada, ubicada en la ciudad de Concon, región de Valparaíso, lugar desde donde opera principalmente la Aviación Naval chilena y mantiene sus aeronaves.
Estos cinco nuevos helicópteros reemplazarán a los veteranos HU-57B “Jet Ranger” y suponen un gran impulso a las capacidades de salvaguarda de la vida humana en el mar, labores de policía marítima, así como apoyo a la instrucción y entrenamiento de personal de buceo y formación de pilotos de helicópteros. El H125 realizará misiones variadas, como el entrenamiento de pilotos, servicios costeros y de rescate, así como operaciones eventuales de seguridad pública. Su polivalencia será un factor importante en operaciones de apoyo a la población civil, cabe destacar que en Chile hay ya más de 40 H125 en servicio. El H125 tiene una tripulación de dos personas y capacidad para hasta seis pasajeros, una velocidad máxima de 140 nudos, autonomía de cuatro horas y treinta minutos con un alcance de 340 MN.
